I like to refer to my Signature Photographs as digital works of art. Of course, there is the art of outdoor
photography; the use of weather and light, finding the shot, and capturing just the right moment. However, that's
only where a Signature Photograph starts. After development, the only thing outside my hands, I scan the
negative or slide at a very high resolution. Then, the image is cleared of all imperfections from the negative
and/or lens. Finally, each photograph is digitally enhanced to fit its mode.
The actual contents of the photograph are never altered. I only make adjustments like color balancing, contrast changes and
image sharpening. Take
All the Colors of the Rainbow for example. I added color to this photograph. This brought out the rich
greens and browns of the sun reflecting off the grass and mud. It also had the effect of bolding the rainbow,
bringing out the contrast between the two sides of the rainbow and generally adding to the awe inspiring mode
of this photo.
My approach to
Monument to Life was completely different than All the Colors of the Rainbow. After adding some
contrast to bring out the double rainbow, I sucked out much of color. Having less color, made the bricks
seem dingier, the tombstones appear whiter and the overall mode became even more somber.
